🌧️ Winter at Sweet Water Farms: What Happens After the Apples Are Gone?

Sweet Water Farms may feel quiet once the last apples are picked and the orchard gates close for the season, but winter is actually one of the most important times of year on the farm.
🌳 The Orchard’s Winter Rest
Apple trees need a period of dormancy during the winter months. This rest allows the trees to conserve energy after a long growing season and prepare for the burst of blossoms that will come in spring.
During this time we focus on:
Pruning trees to encourage strong growth and healthy fruit
Improving soil health so the roots have the nutrients they need
Repairing irrigation systems and fencing
Planning next season’s orchard care
Pruning is one of the most important winter jobs. By carefully removing certain branches, we help the trees focus their energy on producing larger, healthier apples next fall.
🌧 Winter Rain = Next Year’s Apples
California’s winter rains play a huge role in the orchard’s success.
The rain:
Replenishes groundwater
Feeds the soil ecosystem
Helps trees store water for the growing season
Each storm that rolls through the valley is actually helping next apple season harvest grow stronger.
🌸 Looking Ahead to Spring Blossoms
One of the most magical times on the farm happens before apples even exist.
In early spring, the orchard transforms almost overnight as thousands of blossoms open across the trees. These blossoms will eventually become the apples everyone picks in the fall.
If weather cooperates, blossoms appear around March–April.
It’s a short window, but it’s one of our favorite sights of the year.
🧺 What We’re Working On This Off-Season
Even when the orchard is closed, we’re busy behind the scenes.
This winter we’re working on:
Planning improvements around the orchard
Expanding orchard care practices
Exploring new ways to share the farm with the community
Preparing for another great U-Pick season
We’re also dreaming about future events and ways families can experience the farm beyond apple season.
🍎 Counting Down to Apple Season
Apple season may feel far away, but farming teaches patience.
Every winter chore, every rainy day, and every carefully pruned branch is part of the process that leads to the moment when families walk through the orchard with baskets in hand.
And that moment makes all the work worth it.
We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Sweet Water Farms this upcoming season.
Until then, the trees are resting — and the next harvest is quietly beginning.
